What Does "Black Forest" Mean?
The first question you might be wondering is, “What does ‘Black Forest ‘even mean?” The term has come to represent desserts that feature cherries and chocolate, the two pillar ingredients in Black Forest Cake. This German cake stems from Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, a classic German dessert made from chocolate sponge cake, whipped cream, and cherries.
The Best Brownies You'll Ever Make
People have often said, “Nothing beats a boxed brownie”. I was never one to argue, since I honestly agreed with that statement. That was, of course, until I tried Broma Bakery’s intensely chocolatey and delicious homemade brownie recipe.
Sarah, the creator of Broma Bakery, has always been a food blogger I’ve admired over the years. Her recipes are delicious, her photography stunning, her humor spot on with mine. She is a self proclaimed brownie fanatic, having countless brownie recipes on her website. The base for these delicious Black Forest Brownies is the recipe from her article titled, “How To Make The Best Brownies Ever”. Let’s dive in!
How To Make Black Forest Brownies
- Microwave butter in a large bowl until completely melted.
- Add brown sugar and combine until mixture is combined. Allow to cool slightly.
- Whisk in eggs, stirring completely after the addition of each one. Add cocoa powder, salt, vanilla, and flour. Stir lightly to combine, but but don’t overmix!
- Fold in chocolate chips and dried cherries, mixing until just combined.
- Pour mixture in a parchment lined 9×9 pan, baking in a 350 degree oven for about 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center still comes out with a little batter (this is key to make sure the brownies aren’t overbaked!).

Black Forest Brownies
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups unsalted butter
- 2 1/2 cups brown sugar
- 4 eggs, room temperature
- 1 1/2 cups cocoa powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 3/4 cup all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
- 3/4 cup dried cherries, chopped
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a large microwave safe bowl, add butter. Microwave in 30 second increments, stirring the butter after each 30 seconds until butter is completely melted. Remove from the microwave and add brown sugar. Whisk mixture until completely combined, set aside to cool slightly.
- Add eggs one at a time, whisking after each addition.
- Add cocoa powder, salt, vanilla, and flour. Stir lightly, then add dried cherries and chocolate chips. Fold mixture gently until just combined.
- Pour mixture into a parchment lined 9x9 baking sheet. Bake for 50 minutes, or until brownies or set around the edges. When you insert a toothpick into the center of the pan, it's ok if some brownie batter comes out. They'll continue to slightly bake in the pan after they're removed, and you want to almost underbake them to ensure they're nice and soft when you cut them
- Set aside and allow to cool for 30 minutes. Life the brownies out of the pan by using the parchment paper to pull them out. Slice into 16 squares and enjoy!
