Making Choc-Oat Chip Cookies

You may be wondering, “Wouldn’t this just be a chocolate chip cookie with oats in it?” And if you were asking that question, the answer would be…well, yes. And no! Let’s dive in.

What Makes Choc-Oat Chip Cookies Different

As mentioned above, these cookies include chewy oats which add lovely texture to the already delicious chocolate chip cookie. But there are a couple of other things that set these cookies apart!

The amount of chocolate chips: While some recipes will call for 1 to 2 cups, this recipe calls for a full 12 ounces of chocolate chips. I like using the larger chips which mean more chocolate in each bite.

The salt: I’m a big fan of salty chocolate chip cookies, but this recipe includes a surprisingly small amount of salt! It’s the perfect amount, however, to compliment the other flavors. While I would normally recommend a larger amount in cookie recipes, this is one where I suggest sticking to the amount listed.

The caramelized flavor from the brown sugar: Where some chocolate chip cookies call for more white sugar, or at least a more equal amount of white sugar to brown sugar, this recipe calls for almost 5 times the amount of white sugar to brown sugar! This yields a more deeply flavored cookie, which works perfectly with the oats and amount of chocolate.

  1. 3 stars
These spread over my whole pan. Is the 1 cup butter correct and/or the whole teaspoon of baking soda? They look better this morning having fully cooled and taste delicious. I just wonder about the spreading as it looked like a cookie cake and not a cookie.

    1. Oh no Aimee! Sorry to hear that. Yes, the recipe written is correct. Could you have accidentally omitted an ingredient? Sorry to hear that these didn’t turn out!
