Recipes To Make Using Your Less-Used Spices

A collection of recipes that feature those less used spices that are hiding in your pantry!

There comes a time that’s inevitable: the moment when inspiration strikes and you finally decide to clean out your pantry. And let me guess…you can’t remember the last time you used a good  portion of the items you find in your spice cabinet. Time to get cooking!

I polled my followers on Instagram recently asking which spices they wanted to see ideas for. Below are the most requested spices and delicious recipes and ideas to use them up!

A collection of spices on a platter

Poppyseeds

Muffins, dressings, granolas, or as a beautiful garnish: poppyseeds are one of those ingredients that I don’t use often, but when I need them, I need them.

Cardamom

Praised for its beautifully potent aroma and taste, cardamom is a spice that flips sides: sweet to savory. Used widely in Indian cooking and Scandinavian baking, I love having whole pods on hand to infuse simple syrups or grind in to powder for recipes.

Cloves

Whether ground or whole, cloves have a potent and distinguishable aroma. They’re part of the collection of the warming spices that show up in so many baked goods (joining cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger). They also work beautifully as mulling spices for cider (or wine!).

Turmeric

The list of health benefits coming from this bright and bitter spice is astounding! I love adding a sprinkle to everything from smoothies to soups.

Caraway Seeds

Caraway has a distinct nutty flavor and is frequently used in savory baked goods. It’s a spice where the phrase, “a little goes a long way” holds true. I like adding these seeds to roasted vegetables, in bread recipes, and in spice rubs for meat.

Curry Powder

I like using curry powder in the traditional sense (in curries), but I also love adding it to vinaigrettes and creamy dressings. It’s a mixture of turmeric, chili powder, coriander, cumin, ginger, and black pepper.
