By now, most internet thriving folk have seen or heard about the latest viral recipe concept: butter boards! The idea originates from Joshua McFadden, cookbook author and chef of one of my favorite cookbooks: Six Seasons, which happens to be the book that this recipes lives in! The account @Justine_Snacks gave the butter board the legs it has on the internet, where everyone seems to be coming up with their own rendition.

What Is A Butter Board
A butter board features room temperature butter that is spread on a platter or board and topped with a variety of delicious ingredients. The original concept mentions the following ingredients as delicious additions to a butter board:
- Fresh herbs
- Flaky Sea Salt
- Red Pepper Flakes
- Greens
- Pickled items, such as capers
- Fresh Lemon Zest
As mentioned, everyone seems to be coming up with their own version of the butter board. It’s fun to see how everyone is interpreting this fun idea.
Ingredients For A Savory Pumpkin Butter Board
In this Savory Pumpkin Butter Board, I combine canned pumpkin and unsalted butter, creating an earthy and creamy spread that only gets better with the addition of a handful of other delicious ingredients:
- Roasted Garlic
- Rosemary
- Maple Syrup
- Flaky Sea Salt
How To Make A Butter Board
- Bring good quality unsalted butter to room temperature.
- Combine with canned pumpkin,
- Using an offset spatula, spread the pumpkin butter on your board.
- Scoop the roasted garlic cloves from their shell using an offset spatula and spread on the butter (no need to over spread: little pockets of roasted garlic look beautiful and taste delicious!).
- Sprinkle with fresh chopped rosemary.
- Drizzle with pure maple syrup.
- Sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
- Serve with bread, crackers, and crudités.
- Serve and swoop!
Ways To Make A Butter Board Your Own
As mentioned , there are so many ways to personalize a butter board. Here are a few ingredients to choose from. Pick your favorite, and “butter board” away!
- Garlic
- Sautéed Shallot
- Finely chopped and sautéed greens
- Dried Fruit
- Nuts
- Fresh herbs like dill, parsley, cilantro, oregano, or tarragon
- Citrus zest (lemon or orange)
- Flavored olive oil and salts
What To Serve With A Butter Board
Warm and toasted bread is an obvious mouthwatering accompaniment to this delicious savory pumpkin butter board. Crackers would make another nice addition, as well as fresh and seasonal vegetables. While they may not seem like an obvious thing to serve with a butter board, they not only add beautiful color but also serve as a welcome fresh bite in between the richness of the butter.

Savory Pumpkin Butter Board
Ingredients
- 8 Oz two sticks top quality unsalted butter
- ¼ cup canned pumpkin
- 1 head roasted garlic recipe below
- 2 tsp flaky sea salt such as Maldon
- 1 Tbsp pure maple syrup
- 2 Tbsp fresh Rosemary sprigs
- Sliced sourdough bread crackers, and crudités like cauliflower, endive, and carrot to serve
Instructions
- Bring good quality unsalted butter to room temperature and place in a medium bowl.
- Add canned pumpkin and use a spatula to combine.
- Using an offset spatula, spread the pumpkin butter on your board.
- Scoop the roasted garlic cloves from their shell using an offset spatula and spread on the butter (no need to over spread: little pockets of roasted garlic look beautiful and taste delicious!).
- Sprinkle with fresh Rosemary sprigs.
- Drizzle with pure maple syrup.
- Sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
- Serve with bread, crackers, and crudités.
- Serve, swoop, and enjoy!
Notes
- 1 head garlic
- 2 tsp olive oil
- ¼ tsp salt
- Preheat oven to 375.
- Slice the top of the head of garlic off using a sharp knife. You won’t to keep the bulb intact, removing just the top of each close of garlic.
- Place on a piece of time foil and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with salt.
- Wrap head of garlic in foil, pinching the foil at the top. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour until garlic is roasted, fragrant, and closes are tender when pierced.
- Allow to cool before squeezing cloves of garlic from their shell to use.
