How To Make Spicy Steamed Broccoli
Steaming may just be one of the most simple cooking methods. Learn more about how to steam all sorts of vegetables in my article aptly titled, How To Steam Vegetables!
One of my favorite tricks for adding flavor while steaming is by using unique cooking liquids OR adding aromatics to the cooking liquid itself. Typically I opt for simple water, but I like to add citrus, garlic, or vinegar to pack an extra punch. This broccoli includes Aminos, which is a soy-substitute. Feel free to use soy sauce if that’s what you have! Garlic adds a savory kick that can’t be replaced.

Spicy Steamed Broccoli
Ingredients
- 1 large head broccoli, about 4 cups total
- Splash Aminos, or other soy or soy-substitute
- 1 clove garlic, sliced
- Sesame Oil, for drizzling
- 2 tsp mixture of white and black sesame seeds
- Sriracha, for serving
Instructions
- Add water to the bottom of a medium sauce or saute pan (that fits a steamer basket). No need to add too much, about 1/4 inch up the side of your pan is plenty. Add a splash of Aminos and the thinly sliced garlic clove. Add steamer basket.
- Wash broccoli and remove small florets from the stalk. Reserve stalks for another use (I like peeling them and snacking on with my favorite dip). Add broccoli florets to steamer basket, steaming for about 5 minutes. Check for desired doneness, steaming for additional time if needed.
- Transfer broccoli to a platter and drizzle lightly with sesame oil. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and add Sriracha to your liking!
