I love weekends. Arguably a statement that most wouldn’t disagree with. What’s not to love? Sleeping in, lingering over an extra cup of coffee, and of course: lazy breakfast. But breakfast on the weekend looks a bit different than on weekdays. There’s an unspoken rule that weekend brekky should take a little longer, taste a little better, and be over the top. You with me?
One of my favorite things to make on the weekend is breakfast sandwiches. And not just your standard egg and cheese variety…I want the ultimate version. The sky’s the limit! Let’s dig into how I make The Ultimate Breakfast Sandwich.
How To Make The Ultimate Breakfast Sandwich
When it comes to making the ultimate breakfast sandwich, the ingredients you use will truly depend on what YOU like. I offer some guidance in the recipe below, but of course you can choose whatever toppings you prefer.
What To Put On The Ultimate Breakfast Sandwich
- Eggs! Whether it’s scrambled eggs, over easy eggs, poached, or sunny side up: there’s no wrong answer!
- Meat. Really crispy bacon or homemade turkey sausage patties are what’s in my regular rotation!
- Cheese, please. I like using something spicy, like a slice of pepperjack, or else fresh grated sharp cheddar. Fresh mozzarella, goat cheese, or even brie would be unreal!
- Spreads. I like using dairy-free cream cheese (everything but the bagel flavored is excellent!), but salsa and hummus are also delicious options.
- Flavor. Caramelized onions are unbelievable on a breakfast sandwich! Fresh red onion, capers, and roasted red peppers would each make scrumptious options.
- Avocado, always. And perhaps some fresh spinach for an extra dose of green 🙂
Make It Ultimate!
In conclusion, however you make it, these breakfast sandwiches are bound to be delicious. As shown in these photos, it’s fun to create a build-your-own board, where everyone can choose their own toppings. The sky truly is the limit!
The Ultimate Breakfast Sandwich
Ingredients
- 4 English muffins, halved and toasted
- 4 Tbsp cream cheese, I like Kite Hill dairy-free cream cheese!
- 1/3 cup caramelized onions (see notes for recipe link)
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 avocado, peeled and sliced
- 4 sausage patties (see notes for my homemade version)
- 4 eggs, cooked to your liking - see notes for suggestions!
- 4-6 slices cooked bacon
- Sliced red onion
- 1/2 cup fresh spinach
Instructions
- Spread one half of each English muffin with cream cheese. Sprinkle with shredded cheddar and top with caramelized onions.
- On the other half of each English muffin, divide the avocado evenly. Place one sausage patty. Place your egg on top of that, followed by the bacon, red onion, and spinach leaves.
- Carefully place the top on the bottom (it will be messy - but that's ok!). Devour!
