How To Make Pizza Dough
There are so many options for pizza dough out there. You can choose to get a premade pizza crust in the aisle of your grocery store, pick up fresh dough from your favorite pizza place, or you can make it on your own! There are lots of options in between, but I typically opt for a homemade version.
Homemade pizza dough ingredients include:
- Yeast
- Sugar
- Water
- Salt
- Olive Oil
- Flour
A little prep is all it takes to have delicious fresh pizza dough that beats any of the other store-bought options! Just saying…
The Method
- Add water to a small microwave safe bowl. Heat until temperature registers between 100-110°. This may take a few 10 second increments, but make sure that it’s within that range! Add yeast and sugar. Cover the bowl, allowing it to rest for 10 minutes. When it’s ready, it will be fragrant and foamy!
- In the bowl of a standing mixer fit with a dough hook, combine flour, salt, and olive oil. When the mixture is ready, add that to the bowl as well. Mix at a medium speed for about five minutes, until the dough comes together.
- Place in a warm spot in your kitchen. Allow it to rest for six hours, until it has at least doubled in size. Alternatively, you can move the dough to the refrigerator, allowing it to rise over the next 24 hours instead!
- Once dough has doubled in size, punch down and allowed to rest an additional five minutes. Using floured fingers, spread your pizza crust out on an oiled pan.
The Toppings
Like any self-respecting pepperoni pizza, this pie features a classic red tomato sauce. The other ingredients include:
- Pepperoni. For convenience, you can certainly grab the package a pre-sliced pepperoni, but I find that getting a pepperoni stick and cutting my own slices give me more control over the thickness of the places, but also tends to be better quality.
- Mozzarella Cheese: Creamy and melty perfection! I like using large shredded cheese.
- Jalapeno. Fresh slices offer a kick that in my opinion every pepperoni pizza needs!
- Hot Honey. Wow, wow, wow. This spicy and sweet drizzle is next level! And it doesn’t just go on pizza: use this to top chicken, waffles, or simply eat it with a spoon!

Hot Honey Pepperoni Pizza
Ingredients
For the pizza dough:
- 1 cup water, 100-110 degrees
- 2 1/4 tsp yeast (one envelope)
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 cups flour
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
For the pizza:
- 1 cup tomato sauce (more or less depending how saucy you like your pie)
- 1/2 cup sliced pepperoni
- 1 jalapeno, thinly sliced
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
For the hot honey:
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
Instructions
For the pizza dough:
- In a small bowl mix water, yeast, and sugar. Once combined, cover and allow to stand for 10 minutes, until bubbly.
- In the bowl of a standing mixer with the dough hook attached, add the flour, 1 tablespoon olive oil, and salt. Once the yeast mixture is ready, add to the flour.
- Mix until combined and a soft dough forms, about 5 minutes. Place dough in a large bowl coated with cooking spray.
- Cover with a dishtowel and place it in a warm corner of your kitchen. Allow to rise at least 6 hours. (You can make this dough in advance; allowing it to rise in the refrigerator will take 24 hours). If refrigerated, remove an hour before you’re ready to use, allowing it to come to room temperature. Punch dough down.
- Brush 1 teaspoon olive oil on baking sheet. Transfer dough to a baking sheet, using lightly floured fingers to shape the dough into your desired shape. Brush remaining teaspoon of oil on top of the dough, focusing mainly on the outer edge that won't be covered with toppings.
For the pizza:
- Preheat ovn to 400 degrees.
- Top the prepared dough with the tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, and jalapeño slices (reserve some for serving!).
- Bake for 20 minutes until the crust of the pizza is golden brown. If you prefer a pizza that has crispier crust, be sure to check the bottom of the pizza and adjust the cook time to your liking.
For the hot honey:
- In a small glass ish combine the honey, apple cider vinegar, and red pepper flakes.
- Drizzle hot honey over the pizza and slice. Serve warm and with extra jalapeño slices and red pepper flakes!
