What Is Chai?
Chai literally translates to the word “tea” in Hindi, and is a classic South Asian recipe featuring warming spices. Traditionally the spices are steeped with black tea, creating a spicy caffeinated beverage. It’s often served with whole milk and sugar, offering light sweetness.
My Homemade Chai Spice Mix is a DIY version of the popular blend. It features:
- Cinnamon
- Ginger
- Cardamom
- Nutmeg
- Cloves
- Black Pepper
- Fennel
How To Make A Coconut Chai Latte
This easy recipe features just three ingredients:
- Coconut Milk: I like using light coconut milk in this recipe as the texture is more thin, allowing it to froth nicely when warmed.
- Pure Maple Syrup: No refined sugars here! Pure maple syrup offers delicate sweetness without overpowering the other flavors.
- Chai Spice Mix: warm and spicy, this blend adds major flavorful heat.

Homemade Coconut Chai Latte
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsweetened light coconut milk
- 1 tsp homemade Chai Spice Mix, recipe linke below
- 2-3 tsp pure maple syrup
Instructions
- In a small saucepan set over medium low heat, warm the coocnut milk until lightly simmering.
- Pour in to a large mug or glass measuring cup and add maple syrup and chai spice mix.
- Using an electric frother, froth mixture until slightly foamy. Alternatively, you can whisk vigorously, or use a hand mixer to whip it, too.
- Serve in a warm mug and garnish with cinnamon and ground nutmeg.
