What Is Compound Butter?

Compound butter (beurre composé) is softened butter that is combined with a variety of ingredients, yielding a delicious flavored butter to cook or finish with. You can make it sweet or savory, offering a “choose your own adventure” element. Read: endless options.

How To Make Compound Butter

  1. Soften the butter: Make sure that your butter is nice and soft. Don’t be tempted to heat it any way – soften it by bringing it to room temperature on your countertop.
  2. Whip until fluffy: Use a handheld mixer or a stand mixer if you’re making a larger batch.
  3. Add your ingredients: Add in your chosen ingredients and mix completely to combine.
  4. Shape and store: You can choose to shape it into a log and wrap it in plastic wrap, or conveniently pack it into mason jars for convenient storage.
  5. Chill it: Fridge or freezer – your choice! The compound butter will keep in the refrigerator for a few weeks, and in the freezer for a few months.
