Blueberry Banana Smoothie

This Blueberry Banana Smoothie is perfection in a glass! Frozen blueberries offer this smoothie its gorgeous and antioxidant-rich hue, while the banana provides creaminess and essential minerals. Satisfying, sweet, and scrumptious.

You know what I love?

Smoothies.

And if I can level with you (because that’s what friends do)…I’ve always preferred smoothies that have some richness to them. Almond butter, cacao powder, Maca powder…really anything to make it taste like a chocolate milkshake. Don’t get me wrong: I love the classic Strawberry Banana combo just as much as the next person. But when given the choice?

I want the almond butter.

That was, of course – until I made this smoothie.

How to Take a Smoothie From “Um?” to “Yum!”

The first step in making a crave-worthy smoothie is the consistency.

  • Not too liquidy: It should NOT slosh around in that glass!
  • Not too thick : We use reusable straws around here and would rather not have suck so hard our faces look fish-like, thank you very much.

It’s All In The…

The trick to the right consistency is all in…the fruit.

Bet you thought I was going to say the liquid, right? Nope! It’s the fruit!

My trick is making sure all of the fruit (or vegetables) that I’m using for a smoothie or frozen. This lends to the smoothie’s creaminess: you don’t want more liquid, which will only take up more volume, and realistically get too warm too quickly. The frozen fruit blends up beautifully and keeps your smoothie cold. As it should be!

What About The Liquid?

Worry not, friends. The liquid is also v important to a smoothies delicious whip-like texture. But here’s the thing: stop adding so much.

In most smoothies I make, I add just 1/2 cup of liquid. I’ll absolutely add a little more if needed, but you know what they say: it’s easier to add something than to remove it. So ditch the heavy hand when it comes to the liquid, mmmmk?

My favorite liquids to use in smoothies:

  • Almond Milk
  • Coconut Water
  • Canned Coconut Milk (delicious in a Pina Colada Smoothie!)
  • Good ole’ water

Feel free to use whichever milk or liquid you like! I avoid dairy, but if you enjoy it, go for it!

Add In The Extras

I love adding nutrient packed “extras” to my smoothies. Some of my favorites include:

  • Chia seeds (they’re in this smoothie!)
  • Coconut butter
  • Honey or maple syrup (especially if I’m making a smoothie that doesn’t include very sweet fruits or vegetables)
  • Flax meal
  • Maca powder
  • Cacao powder (for that added chocolatey-ness)
  • Almond butter (for days I need my morning smoothie to last me until lunchtime)
