What Is Strata?

Strata is a breakfast dish made up of eggs, bread, milk, and cheese. The egg and milk mixture soak into cubed or torn bread, yielding a “bready egg bake”. It’s completely customizable, allowing you to use what you have on hand, or get creative be combining your favorite flavors in one dish.

How To Make Thanksgiving Leftover Breakfast Strata

Making a strata could not be ANY easier! Here’s what you need to do:

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Butter the bottom of an 8 x 8 baking dish. Working in layers, add the bread, leftover stuffing, bacon, and shredded cheese to the pan. Be sure to reserve a little bit of the bacon and cheese to top the dish (or just add more!).
  • Combine the eggs, milk, and Herbs de Provence. Whisk to combine. Pour over bread mixture carefully.
  • Cover dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 20 minutes, until the dish is set.
  • Allow to slightly cool, top with fresh chopped herbs, and enjoy!

Ways To Make Strata Your Own

As previously mentioned, strata is one of those dishes that can be entirely customized based either on what you have on hand, or what your favorite flavors are.

Switch up the type of bread, the cheese, the meat, the veggies…the sky’s the limit!

Here are a few fun ideas to consider. You can opt to include the 2 cups of leftover stuffing, or increase the total amount of bread to 4 cup. Keep the ratio of eggs and milk the same, and try these ideas out!

  1. Baguette + sun-dried tomato + Talleggio + basil
  2. Rye bread + ham + broccoli + cheddar cheese
  3. Sourdough + crumbled sausage + mushrooms + a creamy truffled brie
  4. Tuscan loaf + pancetta +  Calabrian Chile + fresh mozzarella

What To Serve With Thanksgiving Leftover Breakfast Strata

This breakfast Strata is already rather indulgent, so consider serving it with a few light dishes to round it out as a lovely brunch:

  • Fresh fruit (seasonal is always best!)
  • Lightly dressed greens (I happen to LOVE greens on a brunch table)
  • Pomegranate Mimosas, especially if you’re in the holiday spirit!
