Everybody’s Baking!

Let me ask you a question: how many times, whether it be during a FaceTime, a zoom call, a social media interaction….have you heard someone say they’re baking bread?

If you’re anything like me, you’re hearing it CONS.TANT.LY.

And for good reason. Amidst this global pandemic, many of us are bound to our homes, searching for things to keep us entertained, happy, and quite honestly: sane.

Enter bread baking!

Once thought to be a complex (how many ingredients?), scary (YEAST?!), and time consuming task, is now a common weekend activity for the masses.

What Do You Need To Bake Bread?

Baking bread does not require fancy machinery or gadgets. Here’s what you need:

A few choice ingredients are also required for a standard loaf:

  • Flour
  • Yeast (I use Fleischmann’s or Red Star)
  • Salt

THAT’S IT! Of course, however, you can adjust the additions to your liking! This recipe includes garlic and rosemary, and I HIGHLY encourage you to start here. You might now even need to experiment any further: the flavor is unbeatable!

A few other flavors I’m excited to play with:

  • Fresh Herbs: oregano, thyme, rosemary, cilantro, and parsley
  • Cheese: parmesan, pecorino, and sharp cheddar
  • Salty Things: olives and anchovies

I made this bread for a wonderful group of women at the first Balanced Roots Retreat in February this year. Balanced Roots is owned by my friend Katie, who created these retreat experiences for women who are looking to take time for themselves. To connect, dig deep, ask questions, seek answers, and do so with other like-minded women.

After a day of yoga, meditation, and life coaching sessions, the attendees were treated to a gorgeous candlelit dinner in an adjoining barn. There is only word to describe it. Magical.

This Fresh Rosemary and Garlic Bread was served with lightly dressed greens with winter citrus and pecans, and a selection between my Roasted Root Vegetable Soup and a Chicken and Kale soup. While each course was received well, the guests were practically begging me for this bread recipe.

It is so pleasantly chewy yet so soft!”

“That ROSEMARY.”

“Wait. You made this? How do I?!”

“You should have made another loaf. Just for me”.

Suffice to say, I knew I had a winner. And while it’s taken me some time to remake the recipe, photograph it, and share it, I’d like to think this recipe is coming at the perfect time.
