What Is Brewer’s Yeast?
Brewer’s yeast is a dietary supplement thought to support milk supply in those that are breastfeeding. The yeast itself is not active – meaning, it isn’t “alive” – and contains B vitamins, selenium, and iron, all of which are essential for lactation. It also is thought to stimulate the production of prolactin, a hormone that promotes and maintains milk production.
The amount used in this (and most!) recipes is nominal. Most options available today are also unflavored and unsweetened, so you can add it to a variety of baked goods, smoothies, and other snacks.
Like most supplements, especially for those that are pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s advised that you speak with your doctor about the addition brewer’s yeast to your diet.
I’ve been using this brewer’s yeast in my recipes as I prepare for breastfeeding for the first time. Other great options can be found here and here.
