What Type Of Ham To Purchase

Most ham options in your grocery store will be fully cooked, which is what you want here. While there are options out there that are uncooked, they won’t have the same favor profile was a fully cooked ham, and will take much more time to cook. Chances are very likely that you will easily find a fully cooked ham at your local grocery store or butcher.

Bone-In or Boneless?

Bone In or Boneless?

The next thing to consider is whether to purchase a ham that is boneless or bone in. Bone-in hams are a popular choice since the bone adds flavor and impacts the texture of the meat. I love going this route especially since you can use the ham bone to make flavorful soups and stews after you enjoy the ham itself. They’re also much more of a show-stopper from a presentation standpoint.

Boneless hams, on the other hand, offer convenience and are much easier to slice. They are an excellent option if your’e serving a smaller group oof people, too.

How To Make Maple and Dijon Glazed Ham

Since the ham is already completely cooked, the point of roasting it is to warm it through, of course. But when you use a glaze as this recipe does (and many others do), the high heat thickens the glaze, creating the sticky exterior that infuses the ham with flavor.

For the glaze you will need:

  • Pure Maple Syrup
  • Dijon Mustard
  • Brown Sugar
  • Butter

These ingredients are combined in a saucepan over medium heat, and brushed over the ham before, during, and after it’s done cooking. Brushing the ham with the glaze at different stages of cooking adds different depths of flavor.

Prep Time10 minutes
Cook Time1 hour 30 minutes
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: American
Keyword: Brunch, Dijon Mustard, Dinner, Glazed Ham, Ham, Holidays, Maple Syrup
Servings: 20 servings

Ingredients

  • 10 lb spiral cut ham
  • 1/2 cup dijon mustard
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 3 Tbsp butter

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  • Remove packaging from ham and place in a large baking dish, cut side down.
  • Place remaining ingredients in a small saucepan set over medium heat. Stir the mixture with a whisk as it begins to melt, ensuring the ingredients come together.
  • Using a silicone or pastry brush, brush the ham lightly with the mixture. You'll be brushing the ham halfway through baking, and once it comes out of the oven. Make sure you reserve enough! Cover the ham with foil and place in the oven.
  • Bake the ham for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven, brush with half of the remaining glaze, cover with foil, and return to the oven for 1 hour.
  • Remove from the oven, and check for doneness (the ham should already be cooked - ensure your package states "pre-cooked". If it is not completely hot throughout, return to the oven for 15 minute increments).
  • Brush with remaining glaze and cover again with foil. Allow the ham to slightly cool before slicing and serving!
